Rooster Fish Brewing Takes
Top Honors at Sample New York Beer Festival
The Watkins Glen, NY microbrewery took first place as the best brewery at
the Sample New York Beer Festival, held at the New York State Wine and
Culinary Center in Canandaigua, NY on October 3.
Canandaigua, NY October 8, 2009 – Rooster Fish Brewing, a small microbrewery
from Watkins Glen, NY, won first place at the Sample New York Beer Festival, as
voted on by the festival’s attendees. The festival was held at the New York State
Wine and Culinary Center on October 3, and featured several breweries from across
New York.
The festival was attended by hundreds of beer-loving patrons, who were given a
‘voting chip’ upon entry. Festival goers were instructed to vote for their favorite
brewery by dropping a chip in that brewery’s cup. At the end of the day, Rooster Fish
Brewing had an majority of the chips, beating second place brewery Flying Bison of
Buffalo, NY, to take first prize.
Rooster Fish Brewing featured two of its ales that day: Rooster Fish Original Dark
Nut Brown Ale and Hop Warrior Imperial IPA. The Original Dark Nut Brown Ale is a
deep, dark, chocolatey nut brown with hints of coffee and other roasted flavors,
while the Hop Warrior is a strong, hoppy IPA.
“The Hop Warrior is our most popular ale right now,” said Douglas Thayer, owner
and brewmaster of Rooster Fish Brewing. “People just go crazy for it.
The honors couldn’t have come at a better time for Rooster Fish Brewing, as the
company is amidst plans to expand their brewery operations. According to Thayer,
the first step in the company’s expansion is bottling the Hop Warrior IPA.
“The [Hop] Warrior will hopefully be on shelves in the next couple months in 22
ounce bottles,” Thayer said. Currently, Rooster Fish ales are only available on draft
across New York State.
The New York State Wine and Culinary Center features New York State beer, wine,
and food products through culinary classes, events and its restaurant. The Sample
New York Beer Festival included a BBQ-inspired menu, live music and beer sampling
from breweries across the state.
"The best part about this particular award is that it was determined by attendee
voting," said Thayer. "It really speaks volumes to have actual beer drinkers stop and
take notice of the great beers we’re brewing [in Watkins Glen]. We’re excited, and
very proud.”
